                            RUSSO- FRANCAIS - ENGLISH- ITALIANO

                                                                                                 Michel

Arrival in Moscow June 6th 2012 afternoon. As agreed, Guvakov Fedor is there with a notice mentioning “SPELEO”, that’s enough; He came with Masalimova Gulnaz "Flower", a young speleo around 20 years old…much older than Vador, only 16 years old but we looks much more because of his size and his efficiency. We are waiting for Daniel arriving about 2 hours later. For once, all my luggage are there and I put my helmet on Flower’s head for Daniel to spot us. All together we go to our muscovite guests Shuvalov Andrey and Mihailova (Shuvalova) Ksenia , not an easy thing to do…..Fedor and Flower don’t have any car, we have to take the train, then a taxi for which we have to negotiate because of so many luggage; all that under a storm they had never seen before, avenues changed into floods; moreover, the taxi driver doesn’t know we way, and we are more and more feeling tiredness. A very nice young speleo couple, is welcoming us. No way to be wrong when you go inside! It looks like if they just have settled a sleeping corner in the middle of their speleo club equipment premise. We have a meal, we exchange photos, everybody speak about his own and shared speleo experiences and that’s it, it seems that we have been knowing each other since ever. Positive point, they didn’t propose us their comfortable bed, which probably proves that we still look as young adventurers who can sleep on the floor. Next morning, we wake up quite late, so we quickly have a look at the town (just the red square), visit shortened because of our afternoon flight to reach Eikaterinburg.

Eikaterinburg: Vadim and Jenya we had met at Negrar in Italy and Alexender I only know through mail exchanges are waiting for us. Accommodation is to Vadim’s place and his wife Annia has prepared a welcome meal. Next day, Anna, a young speleo, comes and picks us up to go and visit the town.  Jenya meets us, later on Annia, and we have meal together. In the afternoon, surprise! We go visiting mineralogy museum with the museum manager as our guide (erudite Eugenia knows her very well). We even have the great honor to visit the very closely watched Gold and Emeralds room. In the evening a 3D slide show is scheduled in a cinema, but unfortunately, the screen is not adequate and we have to change in 2D, Alexender who had organized everything is desperately sorry. Well, basically, everybody is happy, even our friend Vassili who was with us in Cuba. Next day, we leave to north of Ural.

URAL NORD

Very early in the morning at Ekaterinburg, Alexender comes and picks us up, 8 people :  Babanin Aleksander, Ivanishev Aleksander Rolshikov Aleksande,Projerina Olga, Tzhurihin Evgeny, Vashkevich Artem, Daniel and me. plus equipment for 2 cars. A second Alexender has come with him, driving an enormous 4x4 which lets us prejudge about difficulties of the roads we are gonna take.

We leave towards north of Ural, more precisely to Ivdel, a town at 510km far, where we’ll complete our shopping, because afterwards, nothing else. From Ivdel, we reach Vizhay, a ghost town devastated 2 years ago by a terrific fire which destroyed thousands of hectares. There, a scientific  Fish-farming
basis has settled down, where Jenya often comes (he’s biologist and specialized with fishes living in Vizhay and Lovza rivers which both meet at that point).

On our way, we stop at Severouralsk Town; we go and see Petropavloskava cave; its entry is situated at a few meters under Petropavlovsky Cathedral at Polunochnoe Village. We spend the night at the scientific basis, in a traditional wooden house. Next day, departure to the basis camp; we load everything in a big military 4x4 truck (GAZ-66) because of a difficult access road: winch and motor saw are part of essential equipment. In fact, it was the best vehicule for such situation: the route was difficult and damaged: crossing rivers, riding over dead trees….We go as far as possible, and then finish by foot to reach the river side. Our friends get a great ability in setting camps. Everything is so quickly organized ! Olga and Eugenia are bustling with meal cooking meanwhile we put up the tents.

During these 2 days, we’ll visit Sevemaya, Lednikovaya and Past Drakona caves. Temperature is 0 degree max and ice concretions are systematically decorating entries. We’ll go back to the camp with inflatable canoe with oars and we let ourselves being carried by river current. Landscape is wild and gorgeous. We sometimes to times stop by the riverside all along the 15km (Tatisheva Caveand some resurgences along Vizhay river). An other night at the basis with speleos who come and join us for the day: they are not at all worried about the 1000km to be done! Evening with guitar, vodka, and some famous Russian vintages, particularly a 1991 white wine….hey, what a coincidence! Soviet bloc collapse year!!! On our way back to Ekaterinburg, and with our guide Eugenia who perfectly knows the area, we are visiting Talitza river rock, Chertovo Gorodishe and Ledyanaya caves on Sosva river side.

URAL SUD

After this long trip, we take the opportunity for a resting day spent to build 3D photos….our friends are so excited to see the result !During the afternoon, Annia, Vadim and myself have visited Eikaterinburg, and we stopped to their club to say hello to 2 of their friends who have just come back from a riding trip in Cuba during which Hector took them to visit Santo Tomas caves in Vinales.Later on, slide show to one of the many “Alexender” (nicknamed Sacha…..all Alexenders are nicknamed Sacha….). Cognac, excellent Russian wine and extraordinary atmosphere.Uly joined us very very late because of car problems between Perm and Eikaterinbourg.

From Ufa early morning we are going to the Jumaguzinskoe reservoir (which
was made on the Belaya
river in 2004, when was bilt the horiblle

Jumaguzinskaya hydroelectro power station).
Daniel is anxious because Ulyana’s car boot seems too small to fit all the luggage, knowing that Uly came with her 2 kids. But Ulyana’s optimized organization worked perfectly ! …..to Daniel’s great despair, we are on the road with a “carremat” between our legs, a sleeping bag under our buttoms, and bags falling down all way long…..Car failures go on, but no worry, it seems to be part of daily life; conclusion, we arrive at Ufa 10 hours later. We had appointment with Anatolii Afanasjev, his wife Elya, daughter Anastasiya who are waiting for us and that we meet at Auchan supermarket. We do some shopping. We still had a few hours by car, then 2 hours by boat and camp setting….too much !!! we give up and ask to start only next morning to allow us to have a rest; (Ulyana who is the only one driver and children, even if they have been very kind and wise during all the trip, need to rest).Departure very early next day, a few hours trip with a lot of doubts about car performance and sequence of our stay. The only thing that we know is that we have to pay 200.€ for the boat !!!We must trust the organizers, but here nothing seems to be sure and for good, (and yet do we have Cuban experience where everything was uncertain!)We arrive at Shulgantash National Park. A water reach makes the site even more gorgeous (See photo) Slava, his wife Rimma, son Romanare waiting for us with an inflatable zodiac in a tiny towing. Daniel has quickly listed people and equipment to be loaded, and his diagnosis is irrevocable: impossible. To be frank with you, I must say that I’m also worried but I try my best to reassure Daniel. In fact, it is not with the zodiac but with a much bigger boat that we are going to reach the camp by the riverside (see photos), and we understand that the price does include round trip ticket and authorization to camp inside the National Park. We charge all the material, including the Zodiac, and we leave. We finally settle, we pitch the tents, inflate the zodiac meanwhile soup is prepared on a wood fire. Everybody is nice and friendly, and keeps busy to get a nice stay.In the afternoon, we embark in the zodiac with equipment and reach Kutukskaya 4  Cave after 15 minutes sailing and 2 hours walking on the plateau We pass in front of Sumgan Kutuk, which is one of the biggest limestone cave of Ural,  this caves are located in the interfluve Belaya and Nugush river; finally we are underground, with the coolness of ice concretion filling the entrance. Coolness is rapidly changing and we are chilled to the bones after we go through the final narrow way in a 4/5 degrees water. The slimmest guys can limit the damages, but considering my ample girth, I could fully enjoy the bath…Photo session is scheduled on the way back. No use to point out that it has been short and quick.

Return by night, meal and evening round wood fire, bachkirien friends have come with some alcoholized supplies, which we like!

Next day, a great zodiac excursion is scheduled. To go to Kapova cave, we sail 40 km up Belaya River; we discover splendid cliffs: Kreiser, Muniach Tash, chiefs rocks on which Lenine and Marx portraits are painted at 30 or 40 meters high. We stop in the small Miasogutova village where we leave the boat and have to take a small 4 x 4 truck even if it was not scheduled, but because of the low water level, we wouldn’t have been able to reach our destination. On our way, we can see Victoriacave entry. Our 2 friends Slava and Zhenya decide to go spotting on the river. We’ll meet them back only 2 days after….

Then we reach “Shulgan Tash” National Park where scientific specialized in ecology Olga Chervyatzova is waiting for us; she has in charge cave studies coordination.

Anatolli would like we go to take some pictures this evening, but we are not in an optimum shape after hours of sailing.

We content ourselves with a simple and quick visit, and we schedule an outing for the next day. This gives us and Olga a very good reason to finish bottles we had kept in stock.

Next day has been dedicated to pictures in the paintings cave with an outstanding guide, Olga! It has been such a great pleasure!

Meal at the touristic site, and departure with the zodiac to reach our base camp; very late arrival.

Next day, we break camp and decide to spend the night to Jenya’s before resuming our journey to Ekaterinburg.

Back to Ekaterinburg: The day before, Ulyana had checked the road map with Anatolli who suggested a “good shortcut”….200km more!!!! Thanks Anatolli!!!

We arrive at Ekaterinburg in the afternoon, Ulyana brings the car to a garage meanwhile we go to a short visit at the local club head office; evening spent with slide show to Alexender’s.

The 20th is a resting day; Daniel is leaving because he has his flight early next day in Moscow and prefers to be there the night before. Everybody is volunteer to drive him to the airport; finally Vadim is taking him back.

Part of the evening is spent at the club and then we celebrate this last day to Vadim’s and Annia’s.

On 21st, departure for Toulousevia Moscow and Brussels for me.

This trip has been very nice : we have met people bringing human warmth, caves giving freshness, and mosquitoes causing exasperation.

Thank you to everybody, people who took care of us at the airport, those who came with us during the expedition and those who lodged us.

Tutti vorrebbero condurlo all'aeroporto.
